Modesty

Modesty can be a tough part of our lives when trying to be Christians in such a ungodly and immodest culture. Many girls are torn between the choice of modesty or fashion. Although this can be a controversy, it doesn't have to be! Modesty and fashion are both totally possible! I first want to talk about why modesty is important, and then how we as Christians can be modest! This is something very important to me, and this is a message I want all young girls to hear. :)
The biggest lie when it comes to modesty is that if you are modest, you are insecure. The media likes to tell us that if we are modest, it means we are ashamed of ourselves and our bodies. My friends, this is such a lie! By being modest, this shows that we respect ourselves and we don't need to show ourselves off. God also wants us to be modest! He tells us in many verses the importance of modesty. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 says, "women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess Godliness and good works." God makes it pretty clear that we should have respectful and modest clothes. God also says we need self control, which means that we are in control of what we wear, and it is our choice to be modest or not. Self control comes with knowing what is modest and what is not, which we will talk about later. Another bible verse on modesty is 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, "do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." This verse so helpful for us when it comes to modest dressing! We don't get to just wear whatever we want, because we are Gods, not our own. God says to glorify Him with our bodies, and this means dressing modest. We weren't made to wear inappropriate clothes and show off ourselves, because that brings pride and separation from God. We were made to GLORIFY God with our bodies. We are God's temple, and the Holy Spirit dwells in us! I think that is pretty cool! One more awesome verse on modesty is 1 Corinthians 12:23, "And on the members of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the great honor, and our us presentable members are treated with great modesty." This verse shows us that by being modest, we are not ashamed of our body, but actually treating it with honor! When you cover yourself and wear appropriate clothes, you are honoring yourself and your body. Modesty is a huge part of being a Christian, and we can't take it lightly. Now let's talk about how to dress modest!
We know the importance, but actually going to the store and finding modest clothes is a whole other story. I believe that when it comes to modesty, it means that the shorts are not too short, the shirt is not too cropped, the shirt is not too tight, and the shirt is not too low cut. This is what I personally look for when shopping. The stores now a days sure do love to make it a challenge for us to find modest clothes, but it is possible! Some of my favorites are forever 21, rue 21 (especially Sadies line!! ;), Soul Honey Clothing, H&M, and random stores at the mall that I forgot. Anyway, of course there are inappropriate clothes at all of these places, but there are also some modest and fashionable clothes as well! Soul Honey clothing is really awesome because they use completely positive messages on there shirts and have pretty much all modest stuff. Forever 21 has some great skinny jeans, and personally I believe you can't really be immodest with pants unless they are crazy tight. The hard part about finding modest shirts is that many are too low, cropped, and tight. I have been thinking lately on if crop tops are modest or not. I personally believe that is they go above the belly button, I try and steer clear of them. It is mostly personal preference on if you want to wear a crop top though. I also believe shirts too tight aren't the best, so I like to go for more of a loose fitting shirt when I shop. Modesty can be a tough thing to talk about because every girl has a different style, but I think that the overall point is clear that we should wear appropriate clothes. God says we need self control when we dress, and that is truly what it comes down too. Look in the mirror and decide for yourself if it is modest or not. I have certain priorities that must be met in my clothes, (shorts not too short, shirts not too cropped, tight, or low cut), so my question for you is, "what are your priorities?" As long as we dress modest, we are free to explore our own style and be fashionable. Remember girls, you can be modest and fashionable at the same time!
